Hi, everyone. I’m excited to share that I have a new weekly column at Le Point, one of France's main weekly news magazines! If you've read any of my stuff on Substack, you know my schtick—science, psychology, and human nature… heavy on the sex. My French is lamentably bad (I can pretty much only inform you that j’adore mon chien), but I have a fantastic editor/translator at the magazine who will work her magic.
What does that mean for Bering in Mind? I’m guessing many of you won't be able to read the articles in French, but I'll continue to post the English versions on my free Substack one month after each appears at Le Point.
My first piece at Le Point is on the "male recognition bias" in gender attribution, about a recent series of evolutionary psychology studies that help to explain why people react so strongly over who gets to be called a woman when, comparatively speaking, they mostly just shrug their shoulders over who gets to be called a man. It’s also know as “the penis effect,” or—give me a minute—“l’effet pénis.”
